Mrs. Doris Evelyn Smith passed away on Wednesday, December 18, 2019 at Homewood Health Campus in Lebanon. She had recently celebrated her 100th birthday. She was born December 6, 1919 in Marion County, Indiana, a daughter of the late Carl John and Ruby Ann (Davenport) Kissel.

Doris was a 1938 graduate of New Augusta High School. She had attended Consolidated Business College in Indianapolis. She worked as a secretary at a realtor’s office and for a law firm in Indianapolis for several years.

On August 24, 1940, she was united in marriage to Cleo Smith in Johnson County, Indiana. He preceded her in death on February 4, 2008; together they shared 68 wonderful years.

Doris and Cleo moved to Lebanon from Indianapolis when her husband bought the Lebanon bowling alley and also started a building business with his brother, Lloyd. She served as a secretary for their company during the early years and she was fortunate to have lived in six of her husband’s homes he had built.

Their daughter, Sandra Sue Smith was born in 1943. During Sandy’s senior year at Lebanon High School the family hosted an exchange student from Germany, Gila (Kloss) Kuhne. Doris and Sandy stayed in touch with visits to Germany, as well as Gila coming here.

She was a member of several organization including: Alpha Delta Sorority, Home Boosters Home Economics Club, Tourist Club, Epsilon Sigma Alpha Sorority, Ulen Country Club, the 9-hole golf group at Ulen Ladies Bridge, and Centenary United Methodist Church in Lebanon.

Doris loved her family dearly and was extremely proud of her granddaughters and great grandsons. She enjoyed playing Bridge, golfing, and shopping. Doris was a realist with a sense of humor that carried her through the joys and tribulations of 100 years.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Doris was preceded in death by her daughter, Sandra S. Gilson, and two sisters, Rosemary (Charles) Neese and Annabelle (Richard) Dennison.

Funeral Services are planned for 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 21 2019, at Myers Mortuary, 1502 North Lebanon, in Lebanon, Indiana.

Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday at the funeral home in Lebanon.

Entombment will follow services at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lebanon.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Centenary United Methodist Church or Boone County Cancer Society.
