On July 22, 2023, around 6:30 AM, a male who had been parked at the police department for seven hours, struck a parked police car. The suspect vehicle backed out of his parking space, drove around one unmarked vehicle and struck the pictured fully marked police vehicle. Damages to the new 2023 police car are estimated at $3000 to $4000. The vehicle was awaiting equipment outfitting and has not been on the roadway. The suspect left the property after claiming he reported the crash to an officer.
After an extensive search Sunday morning, an alert was disseminated to the department staff and today, the suspect was located hiding in the bushes of Bailey Trucking off Barner street by a family member of one our officers.
“The suspect claimed he struck our vehicle as he was being chased by four people who were not present,” stated Chief Scott Shoemaker. “At this point, we believe the individual was not targeting police officers and has made no comments regarding violence toward police.”
Until the crash, he had not caused a problem for officers or make statements that would allow an involuntary detention under Indiana law. The suspect did claim he wanted to be deported earlier in the night when he communicated with an on-duty officer.
Arrested was 35-year-old Cristian DeJesus Calvourbina of California. Official charges will be considered by the Clinton County Indiana Prosecutor’s Office.
