Doing the right thing is something everyone is taught to do. For one Lebanon man, “doing the right thing” earned him recognition from the Federal Republic of Germany. Allen Andrews was presented with the German-American Friendship Award on Tuesday for returning a historic flag and banner to Esselborn, Germany 72 years after it was taken from the town by an American soldier during World War II. Andrews, a war memorabilia collector, purchased the items from another collector in 1999. He started the process to return the flag and banner this year after he found out its significance. Andrews learned that the items memorialize the 14 men from Esselborn who fought and died for Germany in WWI.
