(Undated)  —  Isaiah Thomas says he is not a damaged player.  The All-Star guard tells ESPN he has made significant progress in his recovery from a hip injury.  He added he will “be the same player.”  Concerns over Thomas’ hip have held up a blockbuster trade that would send him from the Celtics to the Cavaliers as part of a package for Kyrie Irving.

(Washington, DC)  —  Giancarlo [[ zjohn-CAR-lo ]] Stanton’s torrid August continues.  He tied the record for most homers in August in MLB history in the Marlins’ 8-3 loss to the Nationals.  Stanton’s 18th blast of the month matched the record set by Rudy York in 1937.  He has 51 homers overall.  Sammy Sosa set the record for any month with 20 home runs in 1998.

>>Sale Makes History As Red Sox Blank Blue Jays

(Toronto, Ontario)  —  Red Sox ace Chris Sale became the fastest pitcher to reach 15-hundred strikeouts in MLB history in a 3-0 win over the Blue Jays in Toronto.  Sale reached the milestone in 1,290 innings pitched, 10 fewer than previous record-holder Kerry Wood.  Sale fanned 11 over seven-plus frames of three-hit ball to improve to 15-and-6.

(Flushing Meadows, NY)  —  Roger Federer is moving on at the U.S. Open after surviving a first-round scare.  The third-seeded Federer needed five sets to get past 19-year-old American Frances Tiafoe [[ tee-AH-foe ]].  Meanwhile, top-seeded Rafael Nadal won in straight sets.  Defending women’s champ Angelique Kerber was upset by Japan’s Naomi Osaka.

>>University Of Houston Postpones Sporting Events

(Houston, TX)  —  The University of Houston is cancelling or postponing several sporting events this weekend in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.  The Cougars’ football season opener at the University of Texas-San Antonio on Saturday has been postponed.  The schools are exploring rescheduling options.  Other affected events include cross country, volleyball and soccer.
