Mrs. Alma Marie Smith, 87, of Thorntown, died Thursday, April 6, 2023, at St. Vincent Hospice in Indianapolis. She was born July 11, 1935, in Boone County, a daughter of the late Clarence and Dortha (Maxwell) Davis.
Alma was a lifelong resident of Boone County and graduated from Thorntown High School with the class of 1954. She married Jerry L. “Snuffy” Smith on June 7, 1956. Alma was an active member of the community and church, having served on the Thorntown Town Board and Boone County Area Plan Commission during the 1970’s. She worked alongside her husband, Jerry, in their trash business, Smith Trash Service. Alma was a member of the Sugar Plain Friends Church since birth and was a dedicated Christian. She was also a lifelong Democrat and proud of it.
Her hobbies included sewing, knitting, and crochet. She loved to garden and enjoyed flowers. Alma was an avid animal lover with faithful pets. Born on a farm, she was not afraid of hard work and her favorite thing to do was spend time with her husband of 65 years, her dog T-Bone, and their parrot, Chester. She loved her family and had many friends.
Survivors include her loving husband, Jerry “Snuffy” Smith of Thorntown; children, Debbie Smith (Charlie Edwards) and Eddie (Sandy) Smith; grandchildren, Barry (Danelle) Gillan, Dustin (Cass) Edwards, Zach (Nicole) Smith, Clay Smith, and Kylee (Ory) Rachell; and great grandchildren, Chloe, Lilly, Paige, Austin, Parker, Jenna, Ben, and Leon.
Alma was preceded in death her sister, Louise (Tom) Keyes.
Family and friends will gather Saturday, April 8, for visitation from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 2 p.m. with Pastor Larry Truitt officiating in the Strawmyer & Drury Mortuary, 2400 N. Lebanon Street, Lebanon. Alma will be laid to rest at Sugar Plain Cemetery in Thorntown.
