Betty Lou Crain, 89, passed away at The Hearth at Tudor Gardens in Zionsville, Indiana on Sunday, January 12, 2020. She was born on January 17, 1930, in Boone County, to the late Arthur Buren and Bernice (Sheets) Quick.

Betty was a 1947 graduate of Whitestown High School, where she was a cheerleader. Following high school she graduated from Approved University of Beauty Culture in Indianapolis.

She was first married to William J. “Bill” Phelps in 1950 and later divorced. On August 14, 1964, she was married to Edward F. Crain in Lebanon, Indiana. Ed passed away on April 2, 2014 and they shared almost 50 loving years together.

Betty owned and operated her own Charm Beauty Salon on Chicago Street. A highlight of her beauty career was winning the Indiana Hairdressers’ and Cosmetologists’ Association, Inc. award for hairstyle and theme at the 1969 Indiana State Convention. She then attended the 49th Annual National Convention in Honolulu, Hawaii to represent Indiana. Her entry was titled “Fly Me to the Moon” in honoring Hoosier astronauts. She also owned the Red Hen Boutique located on the square of Lebanon in the 1970’s.

After leaving the beauty and retail business, Betty obtained her real estate license and worked for Brunes Realty, Century 21 and then Dale Smith Realty until her retirement.

Along with her husband, Ed and son, Mark, she enjoyed the many fishing trips to Dogtooth Lake and Manaki, Ontario, Canada. She was especially proud of the 13 lb., 36” Walleye she caught and displayed in her salon. Many fun stories were shared about the “big catch.” She also enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening, especially growing the perfect tomato.
