Dr. Philip Stone Gibbs, 80, passed away Thursday, June 8, 2023, at Witham Memorial Hospital in Lebanon, Indiana. He was born in Indianapolis, on April 20, 1943, the son of the late Aaron C. and Miriam S. (Stone) Gibbs.
On June 6, 1965, he was united in marriage to Cynthia A. (Matthews) Gibbs in Clayton, Indiana; she survives. They celebrated 58 years of marriage.
Phil was a 1961 graduate of Mooresville High School and a 1968 graduate of Indiana University School of Medicine. For his military service he practiced medicine at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland for two years. Returning to Indiana, he practiced and taught medicine for 37 years in the Anesthesiology /ICU Department at Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis. Phil was honored many times as an outstanding teacher. He saved many lives and taught many others how to save lives.
Phil was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who loved his family dearly. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Lebanon, the Indiana Society of Critical Medicine, and Civil War Medical Museum. He enjoyed history, especially military history, using the “big” tractor, his dog and having one cigar a day. However, his greatest joy was being with the family and teaching everyone something new he had learned.
Survivors include his wife, Cyndy Gibbs of Lebanon; daughter, Kelley I. Gibbs–Budd of Westfield; son, Matthew A. Gibbs (Chris Le Beau) of Chicago, Illinois; three grandchildren, Annaliese Budd, Aiden Budd, and Aaron Budd; brother, Dr. Thomas (Patty) Gibbs; and sister, Sarah (Bill) Brown.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Dr. Stephen A. Matthews.
Funeral Services are planned for 2:00 p.m., on Thursday, June 15, 2023, at Myers Mortuary, 1502 North Lebanon Street, in Lebanon, Indiana. Visitation will be held from 12:00 noon until the time of services. Private Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lebanon.
