Kathryn J. “Joyce” Martin, 81, of Thorntown, died Friday, March 26 at Homewood Health Campus in Lebanon.

Joyce was born December 8, 1939 in Florence, Alabama, a daughter of the late Homer and Agnes Nadine (Richardson) Smotherton.  She graduated from the Rogers High School in Florence with the class of 1958.  Joyce moved to Indianapolis after graduation furthering her education at IUPUI.  She met Donald Martin in 1959 and married February 19, 1960 in Indianapolis. Joyce worked for the Western Boon School Corporation for over twenty years, she was a custodian at the Granville Wells Elementary School.

Joyce loved her family and especially spending time with her grandchildren. The family owned a cabin in Ely, Minnesota for many years where countless memories were made fishing and spending time together. Don and Joyce took their family on  many trips to visit granny in Alabama.

She is survived by her husband, Don,  of sixty one years; sons Brian Wesley (Heather Minard) Martin of Thorntown, Gregory Allen Martin of Lebanon, Robbie Joe Martin of Indianapolis; brother John Wesley “Johnny” (Mary Ann) Smotherton of Waverly, TN; sister Della Smotherton Cook of Florence, AL; daughter-in-law Darla Wright of Colfax; grandchildren Tanya Lynn (Jason) McClain of Frankfort, Gregory Michael Martin, Shelly Darlene (AJ) Brose of Lebanon, Ahsley Nicole of Greenfield, Brandy Taylor of Avon, Alexis Vail Walker of Duluth, MN, Kandis Martin of Plainfield and Wesley Keith Martin of Indianapolis; eleven great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Joyce was preceded in death by sons Anthony Wayne “Tony” Martin and Ricky Keith Martin; brother William Thomas “Butch” Smotherton; sister Louise Davis and brother-in-law John Cook.

Family and friends will gather on Wednesday, March 31 from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 12:00 p.m. in the Strawmyer & Drury Mortuary, 2400 N Lebanon Street, Lebanon.  Joyce will be laid to rest in the Maple Lawn Cemetery in Thorntown.
