The Humane Society for Boone County recently received a $1,000 unrestricted grant for animal welfare needs from the national Maddie’s Fund Foundation.

“We are honored to receive an unrestricted grant from Maddie’s Fund as a result of our participation in the Foundation’s Community Conversations,” HSforBC executive director Susan Austin said. “They host people from all over the nation on a weekly phone call, and bring together the brightest and best of animal welfare groups to share information, solutions, opportunities and experiences with others in the rescue industry.”

Participating in this collaborative and educational dialogue with shelter staffs and rescue organization volunteers is a wonderful resource for information, she said, which “helps HSforBC become the best of the best as well.”

HSforBC board members will determine the greatest needs for this grant, Austin said. It was awarded in early December as a result of her participation in the Foundation’s Community Conversation in November.

“It’s great to be participating in this phenomenal group of animal welfare resources,” she said, “and for the shelter to be rewarded for participation is absolutely incredible. It’s a wonderful way to start the New Year.”

The Humane Society for Boone County is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that is almost entirely volunteers, and dedicated to serving homeless, stray and abandoned dogs, puppies, cats and kittens in Boone County. HSforBC receives no government funding. It is solely supported by fundraisers, contributions, grants, bequests and adoption fees.

Maddie’s Fund is a family foundation created in 1994 by Dave and Cheryl Duffield. Since then, the Foundation has awarded nearly $250 million in grants toward increased community lifesaving, shelter management leadership, shelter medicine education and foster care across the United States. The Duffields named Maddie’s Fund after their miniature Schnauzer Maddie, who gave them much joy. Maddie was with Dave and Cheryl for 10 years and continues to inspire them today. Maddie’s Fund is the fulfillment of a promise to an inspirational dog, investing its resources to create a nation where all dogs and cats are thriving in their communities thanks to a commitment to keeping pets and people together, creating a safety net of care for animals in need, and operating within a culture of inclusiveness and humility. #ThanksToMaddie
