As expected, Meijer Stores Limited has filed a petition to have the Indiana Tax Court review the final determination of the Indiana Board of Tax Review released in August.
It’s called the black box or dark box issue, and it is sweeping the Midwest. Businesses such as Meijer, Lowe’s and CVS argue their stores wouldn’t be of value to any other businesses in the market. This means that the true tax value is much lower and assessments should reflect that. Bottom line is the businesses are looking to save money on property taxes, arguing the assessments are way too high compared to the resale value. More details in the Lebanon Reporter.
