On April 29, 1961, she was united in marriage to Floyd Eugene “Gene” Wethington; he survives. Together they raised their four daughters in Lebanon. Sonya was a life resident of Lebanon until this past year of assisted living in Zionsville.
She was a 1959 graduate of Lebanon High School. After high school, she graduated from Beauty College and received her beautician’s license in 1960. Over the years, Sonya worked in various clerical positions including H&W Supply Company and Boone County State Bank, continuing through the bank mergers of Ameritrust and Society Bank, then becoming Key Bank. She retired from Key Bank after 20+ years. She often said she enjoyed working at the bank where she was always able to visit with many friends and acquaintances. She enjoyed playing Bingo and trips to the casinos. She was a 60-year member of the American Legion Auxiliary and a 30-year member of the Eagles Auxiliary. She was devoted to her family, a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She always made sure the holidays, especially Christmas, were special for her children and once grown, their children.
Survivors include her husband, Gene Wethington; daughters, Jacque (John) Heidenreich of Henderson, NV, Dana Byrkett of Seymour, Jennifer (Jay) Fields of Lebanon, and Janeen (Steve) Rex of Lebanon; grandchildren, Ashley (Alex) Weaver of Nebraska, Brad (Ashley) Heidenreich of Nevada, Brooke Byrkett of Seymour, Eric (Kate) Byrkett of Seymour, Jesse Bethards of Lebanon, Justin (Krista) Rex of Crawfordsville, Andrew Rex (fiancée, Emily) of Lebanon, Peyton Rex (fiancée, Karrie) of Lebanon, and Erica Rex of Lebanon; and ten great grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, Sonya was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Rick Byrkett.
The family would like to thank the staff of Independence Village of Zionsville West and St. Croix Hospice for their care and compassion.
Funeral services are planned for 3:00 p.m., on Friday, April 14, 2023, at Myers Mortuary, 1502 North Lebanon Street, in Lebanon, Indiana. Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. until the time of services. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lebanon.
Memorials may be directed in Sonya’s memory to the Alzheimer Association or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
