Mr. Walter Butch Smith, 82, of Thorntown, passed away peacefully at home on Jan. 30, 2021.

Butch was born Apr. 10, 1938 in Lebanon to the late Merritt and Nellie Mae (DeLong) Smith. He married Maryln Torr on July 20, 1966. She survives.

Butch was a graduate of Thorntown High School and Butler University. He spent 50 years in law enforcement with the Indiana State Police, Indiana State Jail Inspector and as a Boone County Sheriff’s Deputy. He was a 50-year member with the Thorntown Mason’s and a past member of the Murat Shrine and Scottish Rite. He served on the Boone County Council from 2001-2014. Butch loved to travel and had a special interest in gangster history; he especially liked traveling to sites pertaining to John Dillinger. He also enjoyed NASCAR.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Maryln; mother-in-law, Betty Torr; a brother-in-law, Tom (Carla) Torr of Baton Rouge, LA, sisters-in-law, Linda Burton of Jacksonville, FL and Roxanne (Jay) Ward of Clayton, OH; his dog, Merlin and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Butch was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Kelly Burton and sister-in-law, Sue Haskett.

Family and friends will gather Sat., May 15, 2021 for visitation from 11 a.m. until the time of the celebration of life at 1 p.m. in the Strawmyer & Drury Mortuary, 2400 N. Lebanon Street, Lebanon.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his memory may be made to the Boone County Shop With A Cop, P.O. Box 432, Lebanon, IN 46052.
